Why is K-12 STEM Education so important? Well, for starters, during the next decade in the U.S., we are expected to see an increase in demand for scientists and engineers at four times the rate of all other occupations. What’s more, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 15 of the 20 fastest-growing occupations through 2010 will require substantial background in math and science.
|
It’s no wonder, then, that we have some work ahead to prepare students for the competitive technical fields of the future! Although United States students surpassed international averages in math and science, we were still out-performed by many countries. Click here to check out your state’s report card for K-12 STEM Ed.
To respond to this need, Lab-Volt Systems is rolling out a brand NEW mobile, demonstration STEMCart. What a slick setup! Although the STEMCart has many outstanding features, here are a few highlights: |

Did you know...ATC has gone green!
At the end of 2007, we decided we wanted to do our part to help benefit the environment and promote a healthier workplace. Since the New Year, we've been working hard to implement many changes in our daily operations, and today we are officially a green office!
Our 3-pronged approach to greenness has included:
*Detox - We now use only bio-degradable, earth-friendly cleaning products and purchase between 35-100% recycled paper products.
*Conserve/minimize - We monitor our use of power, turn equipment and lights off when not in use, and endeavor to create less waste with two-sided printing, bringing our own dishware, & reusing when possible.
*Recycle - Everyone recycles paper at their desk and in our breakroom we have bins to handle paper items, aluminum, plastic, and glass.
This photo was taken as we celebrated our ATC Earth Day Breakfast. On the menu - organic, fair-trade coffee, homemade pastries, fresh fruit, and free-range deviled eggs. We're also trying to reduce our bottled water consumption with several of us either bringing our own or refilling bottles. A work in progress for the long-haul! |

Connecting with NJ Technology Educators
Advanced Technologies was a Silver Sponsor with a quad booth at this year's NJTEA Annual Technology Conference & Expo. After having expanded our distributorship to include the state of New Jersey earlier in the year, this event was the perfect opportunity to meet and greet the NJ Tech Ed market.
Being a native New Jersey company, Lab-Volt Systems was a large part of our booth display (1st photo). Also featured were several furniture pieces from Greene Manufacturing, including the brand new custom-build cabinet enclosure that houses the CarveWright Woodworking System (on demo with Kurt Maly in 2nd photo above). Gravograph-New Hermes also brought the LS-100 and M-40 Laser Engraving Machines for customers to see.
Even with a tight show schedule, Tom Close, Dave Rohm and Kurt Maly (3rd photo above) found time to enjoy dinner at the famed Carnegie Deli in NYC prior to heading out to the ballpark to witness the Detroit Tigers whopp the NY Yankees (woo hoo!) Tom said "We're thrilled to be in New Jersey and look forward to working with everyone."

ATC Earns Top Sales Award
|

|
At a training session in San Antonio during the week of March 12, 2007, Dan Rodriguez, Sr. Vice President of Marketing at Lab-Volt Systems presented the Advanced Technologies Team with a beautiful plaque to commemorate its successful 2006 selling season. ATC claimed the top dealer spot for attaining 105% of its sales quota. Fellow Lab-Volt distributors, Haldeman-Homme and Amtek Company, were also awarded plaques for their sales achievements in the past year.
Mike Bennett, Indiana and Oklahoma Sales Consultant, accepted the award on behalf of ATC. The entire ATC Sales Team was later able to snap a shot with both Dan Rodriguez, and Peter Schluter, founder and President of Lab-Volt Systems.
|
| In congratulating his Team on its fine performance, ATC President Thomas Close said “This marks 11 out of 13 years we have been recognized as the leading dealer for Lab Volt Systems, a record of which I am very proud! Leadership and success is earned and measured over time.”
Way to go, Team ATC!

2007 National SkillsUSA CNC Competition Results
 |
Thank you to all the participants and supporters of this year's CNC contests at the National SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, MO. According to ATC Regional Sales Manager, Bob Kelly, who has organized and facilitated the CNC events for the past five years, the competition this year was very close - especially on milling. "The contestants are getting more competitive, so the part designs will have to be more difficult next year," he said.
As Chairman of the CNC competition, Bob dedicates many hours each year to pull the entire event together, but he doesn't do it alone. Chad Whited, also representing ATC, along with Josh Dack and Chad Hawk of EMCO-MAIER, all provided outstanding technical support. Likewise, credit is given to several educational team members who assisted with judging and organization.
|
Bob said that SkillsUSA is a great opportunity for students to experience real world applications with the drawings and put their knowledge of trigonometry and mathematical formulas into practice. It also gives contestants a chance to win some great prizes! This year, the four first-place winners won a new bike courtesy of EMCO and Advanced Technologies.
Big congratulations go out to this year's champions: |

ATC Takes the Lead at Ohio ACTE
This year's Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education All Ohio Conference was a phenomenal event. The show took place July 25-26 and was well-organized by the Ohio ACTE coordinators in conjunction with the Hyatt Cincinnati. From the classy continental breakfast spread in the a.m. featuring Starbucks coffee, to the delicious afternoon luncheon, the bases were covered...at least in the food realm!
Between well-attended ballroom conference sessions, there was plenty of time for attendees to interact with exhbitors. Advanced Technologies would like to thank everyone that stopped by one of our
five booths. We had a clear vantage point right at the front entrance to the ballroom, which made it easy to connect with people. Equipment featured included the EMCO Concept Mill 55, Lab-Volt's Industrial Wiring Trainer, a Dimension 3D printer, and 6-station Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) by SMC International Training. We also owe a word of thanks to several suppliers that supported us at the show; reps were on site from Greene Manufacturing, Lab-Volt Systems, SolidWorks, and SMC.
Next year's Ohio ACTE will be August 7-8 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus, Ohio. Be sure to visit us there!
National Sales Seminar at SiMT
October's end found us in sunny Florence, South Carolina at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SiMT), host to over a dozen dealer groups and manufacturing partners during our 3-day National Sales Seminar.
SiMT is an incredible showplace for EMCO machining equipment and is poised to become the region's premiere training facility for industry.
The full meeting agenda included valuable product updates and sales information from EMCO-MAIER, Lab-Volt Systems, Greene Manufacturing, FANUC Robotics, TQ Education and Training, SMC International Training, Amtek Company, and EdgeCAM. Thanks to all who attended! |
 |
A definite highlight was the motivational sales seminar by Al Walker of Al Walker and Associates, Inc. In a very engaging and often humerous way, Al touched on many important topics related to the sales process including professionalism, attitude, and how to better understand prospective customers.
Everyone had a chance to relax and unwind the evening of our Golf Shootout and Southern Barbeque dinner at a local golf course that was a little off the beaten path. Amid some tough (and some not so tough) competition, Chad Whited of ATC drove the ball about 138 yards to land within a few feet of the hole, becoming our new golf champ. Congratulations Chad! |
